A woman sitting cross-legged in quiet meditation in a sparse room, eyes closed, with a faint glow near her chest

When the channel isn't clean, stillness alone doesn't restore what's being given away.

You came to this work to help people. So why are you the one who ends up depleted?

If you've been practicing Reiki or energy healing for a while, and something doesn't feel right — in your body, your energy, your life — you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. This is one of the most common things practitioners quietly struggle with, and almost no one talks about it openly.

Reiki is meant to work through you, not from you. If sessions are leaving you wiped out rather than energized, something in the setup may be off — and it's worth understanding what, before you assume it's simply the nature of the work.

✦ Recognition

Signs You May Be
Depleting Yourself

See if any of this sounds familiar:

  • Exhausted after giving sessions, needing real recovery time afterward
  • Unexplained health issues that started or worsened since you began practicing
  • Emotionally heavy after working on others, carrying their weight home with you
  • Clients getting inconsistent results, or not improving the way you'd expect
  • A nagging sense that something about your practice isn't quite working — without being able to name what

If two or three of these feel true, it's worth pausing here rather than pushing through.

✦ The Root Cause

Why This
Happens

The explosion of free and low-cost online Reiki certifications over the past two decades has made training more accessible than ever — which is wonderful in many ways. But it has also created a quieter problem: a generation of sincere, well-meaning practitioners whose original attunement may not have opened the channel it was meant to.

In a properly transmitted attunement, the practitioner becomes a clear channel for universal life force energy — they're not the source, they're the conduit. But when an attunement comes from a recorded ceremony, an automated course, or a teacher who isn't themselves working within a verified, unbroken lineage, that channel doesn't always open the way it's supposed to.

What Can Go Wrong, in Plain Terms

In many of these cases, no real connection to universal energy is ever established at all. The ceremony happens, the certificate is issued — but what ends up flowing during sessions is the practitioner's own life force, their own prana, rather than energy drawn from a larger source. Giving from your own reserves, session after session, without that energy being replenished from elsewhere, takes a real toll over time — on your vitality, your health, and eventually your life outside of sessions too.

There's also a subtler risk worth knowing about: an attunement that opens a channel without the right safeguards in place doesn't always connect cleanly to the energy it's intended to. This is something I go into more carefully — including what it actually means and how it's addressed — on my full practitioner page, because it deserves more than a quick mention here.

✦ Worth Saying Clearly

It's Not a Reflection
of Your Ability

If you recognize yourself in any of this, the most important thing to hear is: this is not your fault, and it's not a sign you're "bad" at this work.

I know this feeling personally, because I lived it. Before I found my own Guru and the lineage behind my work now, I was practicing with complete sincerity — and quietly falling apart. I was exhausted in a way that sleep couldn't touch. My health was suffering. And I couldn't understand why a practice built on healing energy was making me feel worse, not better.

You came to this with sincerity and a genuine desire to help. What's happening is not a reflection of your intention or your ability. It's a structural problem — and it has a solution.

It took finding a properly verified lineage to understand what had actually been happening in my own practice — and to feel, finally, what this work was supposed to feel like.

✦ The Path Back

What Actually Restores
the Channel

The fix isn't necessarily more practice, more self-care, or pushing through — it's addressing the channel itself. A genuine re-attunement through a verified, living lineage isn't a repeat of a ceremony you've already had. It's a new initiation: one that closes whatever was left open or unprotected the first time, and establishes a clean connection to universal energy in its place.

You deserve to do this work from a place of fullness — giving to your clients from an overflowing channel, not your own dwindling reserves. Finishing a session feeling clear and light is how this work is supposed to feel, not the exception.

If anything in this article struck a chord, I've written a much fuller breakdown — what actually happens with an unverified attunement, the three situations practitioners commonly find themselves in without realizing it, and how a personal lineage re-attunement restores a clean channel.
